If We Were Sitting in a Coffee Shop…

If we were sitting in a coffee shop, sipping coffee together… I would tell you what has been on my mind lately. Besides all of the Be the Best You events coming up, such as the BTBY Friends for Healthy Living weight loss support group meeting tonight and the Be the Best You: The Party on Facebook on Wednesday night, what has been on my mind recently is thankfulness. With Thanksgiving just ten days away, many of us have been thinking about what we’re thankful for this month. November is famous for the “30 Days of Thankfulness.”

So if we were sipping coffee together, I would tell you what I am thankful for. I’m thankful for all of you who read my blog. You are the main reason I write it. I am also thankful for my family. Where would I be without them? They have helped shape me into the person I am today. They continually provide support and encouragement, always standing by me. Same could be said for my friends, both in person and online. I wouldn’t have gotten as far as I have if I didn’t have all of these people on my side. I am also very thankful for my cat who helps give me love and comfort when I’m not feeling my best. Not to mention all of the obvious things: a roof over my head, food to eat, clean water to drink, clothes and proper shoes to wear, and phone and internet service. All of these things keep me safe and comfortable, or allow me to do things I need to do.

If we were sipping coffee together, I would start a lively discussion about why being thankful ties into weight loss. Reflecting on all the good and positive aspects of my days has been vital for my mind shift to a more positive person. That positivity helps me when things are tough in my journey. It gives me a reason to continue moving forward. Seeing the positive aspects of my life has also made me realize that there is always a bright side to the negatives as well. I know that when things are hard or I’m feeling really horrible, there is a reason behind it, even if that reason is just that it is helping strengthen and shape me into the person I’m meant to be. Growing mentally and having a positive mindset provides a great basis for my weight loss and persistence to keep it off. A large part of this is simply being thankful for all of my tools, lessons, opportunities, achievements, and every other part of my transformation.

If we were sipping coffee together, I would ask you… What are you thankful for?

Announcing Online Weight Loss Support Group First Meeting

On Monday, November 16th from 7-8pm US Central Time, Be the Best You will be having it’s first weight loss support group: BTBY Friends for Healthy Living.

All of November’s meetings will be completely free. We will be having Get Togethers on the following dates and times:

  • Monday, November 16th from 7-8pm Central (as mentioned)
  • Thursday, November 19th from 7-8pm Central
  • Monday, November 23rd from 7-8pm Central
  • Saturday, November 26th from 12-1pm Central
  • Monday, November 30th from 7-8pm Central

(If you live on the West Coast, it will be 2 hours earlier than the time posted. If you live in Mountain Time it will be 1 hour earlier. Finally, if you live on the East Coast, it will be 1 hour later than the time posted.)

You are welcome to attend any or all of those meetings for free. In December we will start low cost, paid monthly memberships so now is your chance to try these meetings out without any financial obligation.

We will be focusing on providing advice, support, and accountability for each other. Some things that are optional include reporting weigh-ins, food/water intake, or exercise. This month we will be figuring out what we all need in terms of accountability and tools, but what won’t change is the advice and support aspect.

(Note: After doing a ton of research on close to ten different sites, I decided to stick to the “course” website that I already use. I set it up so we have one place to post for each meeting. You can leave comments for everyone to see in one place and you can also post pictures there as well.
All other meeting places either didn’t allow the features I needed or they required at least one person to be on video. Since I don’t have the equipment to do that, I opted not to do our weight loss support group meetings that way. However, I hope to have what I need to do so in January. Don’t worry though, you won’t be required to be on video unless you choose to be!)

I am taking a survey for a “service” I would like to provide to others on their weight loss journeys. Please leave me a comment or email answering the questions or simply stating if this would be of value to you. The online support group for weight loss would be either in video or chat form. I have to figure out where to host this service but already have two or three ideas, and will be keeping you up-to-date as I figure it out!

I would also provide healthy living tools and/or challenges each week to keep incentive and motivation as high as possible. Ideally I would provide at least two meeting times each week for this support group to meet up online, such as at least one morning and one evening time, but maybe even a weekend meeting.

  1. Would you find value in an online weight loss support group hosted by someone who has successfully lost weight themselves?
  2. What kind of tools or features would you like to see in such a service? For example, a virtual weekly weigh-in (either posting the weight or posting a picture of the number on the scale), weekly check-ins with calories or exercise logs, etc.
  3. What time of day would work best for you personally, and weekday or weekend? (This information will be used in determining the best times each week to set up this group).
  4. How much would you be willing to pay each week or month for membership fees? Other groups charge a monthly or yearly fee for a similar service. Mine would be kept low because I believe in keeping things affordable, but am interested to hear how much you would think would be reasonable per week/month. I will likely make the first meeting completely free so people can try it out before paying.
  5. BONUS: Which would you prefer: conference type video or live chat with/without photos?
